So you would think by now I would have this weight loss thing down….
I do NOT, I’m still figuring it out and tweaking as I go.
Like I’ve stated in previous posts nutrition has always been my thorn. It’s what I’ve done in excess for years and years which ultimately packed on the pounds.
I’ve heard it said time and time again that weight LOSS is less calories in than calories burned.
Pretty simple right?
Well I recently got a little lost in the desire for quick results and was willing to try just about anything to get under 200 lbs. Forgetting that I was consistently losing based on what I was doing. I was losing about 8.5lbs a month at this time (around Jan. 21), but oh no I got greedy and took the advice to start eating 6 meals a day. I figured what the heck, give it a shot, maybe my body would respond with the extra 200 calories a day.
See the logic I was presented with was as follows:
You lift weights, therefore you are building muscle and muscle requires more energy (calories) to burn more calories…..seems logical right?
So I started to eat 6 meals a day which put me around 12-1300 calories a day, still a low calorie input by most people (trainers, bodybuilders etc) standards.
I’ll be honest, I was super comfortable with the idea, but like I said I was chasing rapid weight loss. I had lost sight of the fact that I HAD hit my first goal of losing 100lbs by the one year mark.
Anyway, so on Jan 21, I started eating 6 clean meals a day, I elimated all fruit due to its high sugar content….blah blah blah
I also decided that aI would give it TWO WEEKS, and IF I saw weight loss I would continue with this plan.
Well yesterday was 2 weeks and when I stepped on the scale I GAINED 1.5lbs. Now I totally get that since I’m a woman hormones play a part in weight gain, BUT a gain of any kind was NOT the goal!!!! Plus it was confirmation to my original thought that I just wasn’t comfortable eating that many meals or calories.
Sure there might come a time when I’m comfortably at my goal weight (157) and I’ll eat that much, we’ll see WHEN I get there, but in the meantime I’m working my butt off to get there.
All of this to say a few things:
1: ALWAYS do what you are comfortable with, even when you have people telling you it’s not the right way. Ultimately it’s YOUR body and YOUR health and you have wisdom with what works for you. So don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. Take all the suggestions in and then choose what works for you. Realize in order to find out what works for you, you have to experiment. For example, I had to try eating 6 meals a day for a couple of weeks to see if it would work….it didn’t, so it was back to the drawing board for me.
- Absolutely YES, weight loss IS an equation of a calorie deficit. So eat less calories than you burn. It really is that simple!!
According to the Mayo Clinic online: “Although your metabolism influences your body’s basic energy needs, it’s your food and beverage intake and your physical activity that ultimately determine how much you weigh.” http://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-living/weight-loss/in-depth/metabolism/art-20046508
Let me say it again…..your food and beverage intake and your physical activity (exercise) determine what you weigh!!!!! It’s that simple, do your own research, listen to podcasts on nutrition, weight loss and food and then come to your own conclusions.
We can do anything we set our minds to, I AM CONVINCED of it!!! Let’s defeat obesity!!!
